So I've been on Peak 7 for about 2.5 weeks now. The first week I got here it was snowing non-stop, I snuck through i-70 in my '93 honda civic just in time. (people on that road are f'n nuts.

The first week we got dumped on. Pow every day face shots, the whole 9 yards, that's what I moved out here. But yeah as Harv said it's been a dry week and a half. No worries though, the mountain broke records with attendance last week. Im not sure if this is a true number (bar talk) but someone said (forgot which day) that there were 24k on the hill. So what I'm saying is wait till this sunday, then let it start dumping so the snow stays fresh for those who deserve it, rather than the 'tourists'- i know i know, i still consider myself one; but you get the point.

As for UT yeah the snow pack is terrible, they have been getting dumped on, but nothing is safe to ski since it's all sitting on a base of glare ice. There have been a lot of avis in CO as well. Hear a natural one break 2 days ago while talking to friends on the mtn. Could see one that broke loose looking toward Dillon as well.

Found some sweet stashes, rode the bowls not a lot of great pictures though, I never want to take the time to snap pics when i could be making freshies, plus its so f'n cold and windy my battery lasts about 2 minutes.

It also warmed up last week, so it killed the snow, now its pretty hard pack in the woods. The trails are even getting loud
Picked up 7" last night, still snowing (11:56am), and blowing like.. a lot. It's good for the trees though 8)

Life's been good, got a job downtown at Cecellias so I have some money flow, esp over the past week and this upcoming week. Bruised my sternum about 6 days ago, and it only seems to be getting worse, (don't do it, it hurts and from what I'm told it lasts a lonnngggg time)

Like I said, I'll get better pics as time allows. I'm also planning on picking up a split board soon. Once I'm in the BC i'll have enough time to take some quality pics.

Sweet. At 94% open you have a lot to have fun on. Interesting observation, though. Breck's snowfall to date is 119". Whiteface is at 101" and counting with a big storm today and tomorrow. Sugarbush has had 120". Not much more snow out there, but certainly a lot more terrain.

Last time (only time) I was at Breck was a year before the Imperial Express. You really had to earn your turns on 7 and 8 from the T Bar back then. Of course, that probably meant more for those willing to put in the effort. Sounds like you've been busy on 7. The trip I took with my brother was in April. We did hike/traverse out to Art's Bowl. It was neat to see the holes left by the avi control, where we had seen/heard them setting off charges that morning. That was all we did on 7. We hit the Lake Chutes on 8. That was quite a hike up the spine to the left of the area, between the Lake Chutes and Snow White. That was some truely steep terrain, but at least it wasn't a no fall zone. Another out of the way area we enjoyed was the hike to terrain off 9. The Back Nine, Twin Chutes and some of the tree shots below those. Kind of an eastern feel to those trees.

Have you been over to A Basin? Lots of fun to be had there.........

ehhh.. i mean there are the townie sluts. But with all the blisters on lips I have seen I don't plan on taking any chances. Have been hanging out with a cool girl from Dillon, also met a handful of girls out here from Oklahoma this week, good times :lol: Gotta love college break!

When the Dew Tour was here I ate dinner next to Gretchen Blieler, mmmmm. (google her)

I still have a lot more bowl exploring to do, it's just the past two weeks have been terrible with crowds so I haven't even bothered hiking around/freezing my butt off to ski tracked out stuff. I have yet to hit A-basin, Breck has been getting more snow so far, so thats pretty much the only reason. I have friends flying in tomorrow and I think we'll hit Abasin on sunday, maybe friday.

About the snowfall, I think you guys are just well above average, supposedly we are too, they have been saying it was the snowiest Dec in like 8 years. Feels an awful lot like the east, Got our 10-12" today, 45 degrees tomorrow. bye bye fresh goods.

I wish I had more time/energy to see more terrain in the past couple weeks, but it's the busy season for work. In about a week it'll all slow down and I'll have ample time to explore, also I'll be that much more acclimated. I want to join a gym but its hela expensive out here... for everything. Maybe i'll check in frisco/dillon today for a cheaper alternative.

Bruised sternums do take a long time to mend. years ago, i had mine bruised/broken in TKD class. things got a pretty rough there, but that's what makes you tough.

I haven't been following the weather out west. But my guess is that 120 inches at Breck adds up to WAY more snow than 120 inches at Sugarbush or Whiteface.* How much NCP has Breck had this year? It's not just snowfall but snow preservation. I'd be surprise if much NAIR had fallen on that snow.

On the other hand CO NEEDS more snow to cover the terrain...as in general it is steeper and more rugged. As I said that is a generalization about "the west" not Breck in particular.

However, I'm probably coming out to ski the summit county resorts the 3rd or 4th week of March. So maybe I'll get some of that for myself.

Yeah Harv you are right about the NCP, None since I've been here. I can count on one hand how many times it's been above freezing; well maybe two. The terrain deff. needs a lot more snow than back home. Although we don't loose any of the snow from heat/and wet precip. the wind does HUGE damage to terrain. We got 15" yesterday and there are a LOT of bare spots in exposed sections.

Let us live vicariously through you. Full A Basin trip report, not just pics/vid. What did you ski? How were the conditions?

When I went it was a couple years before Montezuma Bowl opened. I'd love to get back there now that the backside is officially part of the resort. The entire mountain is great, but my brother and I had the most fun off the Pallavicini Lift, and hoofing it out the North Pole Gate on the East Wall (we were there in April). The views from the summit, up above Loveland Pass and the Continental Divide, are truely amazing. Coming in from Denver it's quite a drive up over the pass as well.

Since it's part of your pass I assume you'll hit Keystone at some point? Looks to have some interesting terrain, especially in The Outback.

Sunday:

Didn't get to the mtn until about 10:30. Awesome lodge/parking. There doesn't seem to be a lot of parking there, which I think is a GREAT thing. The whole mtn has a Northside vibe combined with whiteface attitude. Old school lodge/ticket window/learning center/lifts.


Went straight up and over to the Montezuma bowls. Hiked up about halfway across the ridge in 50+ winds (guess) ((total whiteout at times))






Dropped in, about 10 ft past the cornice it cleared up because it was obviously out of the blowing snow. I would say 4-5" of new snow on top of either tracked out, or avy debris. Was good enough to rip some large turns, especially once you got out of the chutes into the open bowl. Took about 6 runs, trying out each shoot that was open. Hit a few rocks, but for the most part the were covered. No bad shots. It was fun and pretty steep. Had a friend fly in for the weekend and he said it was the first time he was 'a little scared'





We only skiied one run on the front of the mountain on our way back to the lodge. It was a bad wind with low temps so once we were beat from the bowls we called it a day around... 1:30?
