howdy HPD and snowballs.

Not to change the subject or anything, but I just google earthed the Whiteface area trying to find Marble Mountain, and I came up empty. I was kind of looking for backcountry stuff, even though whats left is probably overgrown and wouldn't be skiable unless there was a ton of snow.

Also, I haven't hiked WF/Esther yet, does the trail go through the marble mountain area??

CU your post inspired me to go take a look.

Pic of trail, it is narrow and steep. It gets narrower as you go higher. This pic is about 2/3 from the top of where the lift was.

This must be the top of the lift.

As you continue along toward WF and Easter there is another tobogon storage and that's about it as far as I can tell

Thanks for posting those HPD. I'm going to hike Whiteface and Esther on one of these weekends. Its just a matter of when. I'll probably start from ASRC since that would be a reasonable dayhike.

someone mentioned in the earlier thread about not being able to see the old ski area in Google. I think Bing does a better job here:

zoom in to the black and white, then the ski trails jump right out.

I had read that Mable had a pretty short life span due to lack of snow. I have a couple of 8x10 B&W glossies of people in the lodge in its hayday.

Snowman thanks for showing us BING. Wonder if the photos show the ski area better becasue the photo is older?

Looking down at Gore....the photo does not have the Top Ridge Triple 2002 or, if I am right, the "new" Northwoods gondi 2000 ish. Best case scenerio 9 more years of growth, assuming Google Earth has up to date photos, which they may not.

It seems like some pics on Bing are newer then Google, but others are older. I end up using both. The google maps topo (terrain) is pretty handy.

I get a kick out of looking at the 'dacks and ski areas on both. The Google earth fly overs are cool, especially when you couple them with a gps. You can figure out what mountains you can see from where.
